CCR Staff Shooter Classic — Staff Shooter Guide
Welcome to the CCR Staff Shooter Classic. This guide outlines how our tournaments operate, how handicaps are calculated and locked, how match play progresses, and how season leaderboard points are accumulated.
Our league structure is designed to emphasize head-to-head match play competition under pressure while maintaining a level playing field for archers of all skill levels.
Tournament Formats & Workflow
Each league event is managed as an independent tournament and follows a structured three-phase workflow:
Phase 1: Qualifying & Seeding → Phase 2: Handicap Calculation → Phase 3: Bracket Match Play
Qualifying & Seeding
Every tournament begins with a qualifying round to establish seeding rankings and baseline handicaps.
- Qualifying Arrow Count: Archers typically shoot a 9-arrow qualifying round (maximum score of 11 points per arrow, totaling 99 max raw points). Qualifying arrow counts are flexible and can be adjusted in event setup if warranted by the schedule or format.
- Seeding Rankings & Tie-Breakers: Archers are ranked by their raw qualifying scores to populate the bracket. If archers tie on raw score, a tie-breaker modifier is factored in to automatically resolve seeding order and ensure proper bracket placement without ties.
How Bracket Match Play Progresses
Once seeding is locked, archers enter the head-to-head bracket stage. Match play progression depends on the selected event format:
Match Arrow Count
A typical match play setup consists of 6 arrows (maximum raw score of 66 points at 11 points per arrow). Like qualifying, match arrow counts are flexible and may be adjusted per tournament in event setup if warranted by the schedule or format.
Double Elimination Progression (Standard)
- Winners Bracket (WB): Every archer starts in Round 1 of the Winners Bracket based on their qualifying seed. Winning a match advances an archer into the next round of the Winners Bracket.
- Dropping into the Losers Bracket (LB): An archer’s first loss in the Winners Bracket does not eliminate them. Instead, they drop into the Losers Bracket. As the tournament continues, archers who lose in later Winners Bracket rounds “drop down” into specific Losers Bracket rounds to face archers who are fighting back through the Losers Bracket.
- Elimination: An archer’s second loss results in official elimination from the tournament.
- Grand Finals & The “If Necessary” Reset Match:
- The undefeated Winners Bracket Champion meets the Losers Bracket Champion in the Grand Finals Championship Match.
- If the Winners Bracket Champion wins, they remain undefeated and win the tournament.
- If the Losers Bracket Champion wins, both archers now have exactly one loss. This automatically unlocks an “If Necessary” Reset Match—a single, winner-take-all final match to decide the ultimate tournament champion.
Single Elimination Progression
For quick-format events, Single Elimination may be used. Archers advance with a win and are eliminated on their first match loss (no Losers Bracket or Reset Match).
BYEs & Advancement
BYEs: When the total number of archers does not fill a full bracket (e.g., 11 archers in a 16-archer bracket), top-seeded archers receive automatic Round 1 BYEs and advance directly to Round 2 without shooting a match.
The Handicap System & Lock Rule
Our handicap system uses baseline qualifying scores to calculate a per-arrow allowance, paired with a dynamic performance lock that rewards hot shooting while preventing sandbagging.
Initial Handicap Calculation
Following the qualifying round, each non-scratch archer receives a baseline per-arrow handicap:
- Default Allowance Factor: 0.8 (80% factor).
- Scratch Shooters: Archers designated as “Scratch Only” compete with a 0.00 handicap allowance throughout the tournament.
Applying Handicaps in Matches
In match play (typically 6 arrows—adjustable per tournament as needed), each archer receives a score allowance based on their current per-arrow handicap:
If net scores are tied at the end of match arrows, a tie-breaker modification or shoot-off arrow determines the match winner to ensure unambiguous advancement.
The Handicap Reduction & Lock Rule
To ensure competitive integrity, an archer’s handicap can decrease during a tournament, but it can never increase.
- If an archer shoots BETTER than their entering handicap: Their per-arrow handicap is immediately reduced to match their match performance score. This lower handicap is permanently locked for all subsequent rounds in that tournament.
- If an archer shoots EQUAL TO or WORSE than their entering handicap: They retain their existing locked handicap for the next round.
Example: An archer enters Round 1 with a 0.62/arrow handicap. In Round 1, they shoot a hot score calculating to a 0.27/arrow performance. For Round 2 and all future rounds, their handicap is reduced and locked at 0.27/arrow. In Round 2, if they shoot a lower score calculating to 0.93/arrow, they retain 0.27/arrow for the next round.
Season Standings & Point Accumulation
The league championship is decided by accumulating season points across official league tournaments. Points are earned through participation and head-to-head round advancement.
Season Point System
Point Category | Rule & Criteria | Default Points |
Attendance Points | Awarded to every archer who enters and completes qualifying in an official shoot. | 10 Points per Shoot |
Round Advancement Points | Awarded every time an archer advances past a bracket round (via Match Win or BYE). | 15 Points per Round |
BYE Equity
To ensure top-seeded archers are not penalized for earning a BYE in early rounds, advancing past a BYE automatically awards full round advancement points, putting BYE recipients on equal footing with match winners.
Event Status & Official Standings
- Draft / Practice Shoots: Practice shoots or test brackets are excluded from season standings.
- In Progress Shoots: Live shoots under scoring reflect live bracket updates, but points do not apply to the official season leaderboard until the tournament is completed.
- Completed Shoots: Once the Grand Finals are concluded and the tournament is marked Completed, attendance and round advancement points officially publish to the Season Standings leaderboard.
- Re-Opening / Corrections: If a shoot is re-opened to correct a score, its points are temporarily removed from the season leaderboard until re-completed.
